Financial literacy is a lifelong learning process requiring both academic and practical components. Financial counseling and education programs should be designed to appeal to young and old alike, take into consideration different learning styles and modalities, and utilize any and all mediums found to be effective.

The Center for Financial Certifications™ was established as an independent division of the Institute for Financial Literacy® in order to provide professional development, training, and certification for those in the financial counseling and education fields. The Center’s programs are designed to be relevant to both financial professionals and individuals volunteering in their community.

The Center for Financial Certifications™ currently offers two certification programs. The first program, the Certified Personal Finance Counselor™ (CPFC™) was designed to provide professional development and training in the areas of counseling techniques and the elements of financial management. This will give individuals who work with clients in a one-on-one setting the tools they need to assist them in establishing personal budgets, evaluating debt loads, setting financial goals, and developing a plan of action. The CPFC™ was also designed to fulfill the requirements of the Uniform Debt Management Services Act and various state laws.

The Certified Educator in Personal Finance™ (CEPF™) was designed to provide professional development and training for those who work with clients and communities in a group setting to educate them about understanding the fundamentals of personal finances. The CEPF™ was also designed to integrate and adhere to the Standards and Best Practices in both K-12 and Adult Financial Literacy Education.
